New At The Shelter Check It Out

It's all about you!

Late in December I wrote about the amazing individuals who work at the shelter.

This time, it's all about YOU!

Here are some of the highlights from 2009 in which the Human Society of North Central Iowa was able to accomplish because of YOUR support.

  • 604 dogs and cats were adopted in 2009; that's a 42% increase over 2008.
  • All dogs leave the shelter micro-chipped, tested for heartworm, and with all their vaccinations up to date.
  • All cats leave the shelter tested for Feline Leukemia and with all their vaccinations up to date.
  • Our "Friends of the Animals" group conducted or assisted with 16 fundraising events in 2009 and raised $93,729!
  • Overall, donations to shelter operations increased over 100% in 2009, for a total of $161,586.
  • To date, we've raised $1,297,000 for the capital campaign; $741,000 in cash and $556,000 in pledges to be paid over the next five years.
  • We finished the year 1% under budget for expenses overall, and reduced our veterinary bills by $13,000 compared to 2008.

  • Good news aside, please don't think that your contributions and support in 2010 is not needed. As with most animal shelters, we count on gifts for 60 to 70% of our annual revenues. That means that every animal we care for costs us, on average, $400, and we only receive $75 to $130 per animal in adoption fees. YOU remain the force behind our ability to save and care for so many abandoned and homeless pets. Please know that you have my heartfelt thanks for your support, and my hope that your support will continue in 2010 and beyond.

I can't wait to see what we can accomplish together in 2010!

    Gratefully,
    Laurie Hagey
    Executive Director
