Smokey & Nakoma (formerly known as Balto & Nikki)

In 2003 a stray husky mix came into the shelter whom we named Balto. Balto quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite. He had the best personality but we were baffled when he didn't find a home quickly. Anyone would have been lucky to have such an awesome dog. Eventually another stray dog from the same area, whom we called Nikki came into the shelter. She was extremely sweet and loving and we found out that her and Balto and Nikki had belonged to the same person. This person was finally reunited with her pets and it was a very emotional reunion! We found out that Balto was named Smokey and Nikki was named Nakoma.

This is the latest update from their owner:

I am just writing to let you know about smokey and nakoma.Smokey is doing just wonderful. Nakoma has passed away. She had a tumor on her chest. I just wanted to say thank you very much for letting me have her back even if it was just for a short time. My kids where so happy to have her back again. I will send you a picture of the dogs. Thank you again.

The Humane Society of North Central Iowa was very saddened to hear of Nakoma's passing. Our hearts go out to her family.
